Functional Skills now approved by the Government for Early Years Educator qualifications

Caroline Dinenage, the Early Years Minister, has confirmed that Functional Skills qualifications will be accepted for level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications from April.

The campaign started when the previous Government Minister made a hasty (and frankly ill-informed in my view) decision to require GCSE A*-C passes in maths and English before starting an EYE course. This had the effect of decimating recruitment and excluding a significant number of great candidates from the sector.

[The BBC covered the story](http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-39154241) with more in-depth coverage coming from the sector’s own sources here.
