Politics, promises and practicalities

We’ll run a complete comparison of the main political parties election promises, once they have been published in full.

In the meantime, a more practical solution appears in FENews under a featured article entitled Teaching practical functional English and maths as ‘the standard’ for all children and young people written by Graham Hastings-Evans of awarding organisation NOCN.

It makes an interesting read.

Graham argues that the current approach to starting with GCSE should be turned on its head. “Employers are looking for people who have a good level of practical and functional English and maths for the majority of jobs. They are not looking for people who have an academic knowledge.”

Graham continues “Let’s consider teaching practical functional English and maths as the standard for all children and young people; providing an option of a more academic GCSE course for those who see their careers in academia.”

I couldn’t agree more!
