GCSE resit passes fall again

The pass rate for students resitting GCSE English and maths in November has fallen compared with last year.

There were more than 92,000 entries across the two subjects between the AQA, Edexcel and OCR exam boards. The overall proportion achieving a grade 4 or higher in English language in November 2018 was 36% compared to 39% the previous year. In maths, the overall proportion achieving a grade 4 or higher was 27% compared to 30% the year earlier.

Under the condition of funding rules, the tens of thousands of learners who failed to achieve a grade 4 will now be forced to resit the exam yet again in the summer.
